    Happy Birthday!
On this wonderful day 26(?) years ago the fabulous Kelly McYoung was born.  The world has been a better place ever since.

    So Confused
I got up early and looked out and there was this thing. It took me a long time to remember what it was, but I believe it's called the sun. Holy shit, how beautiful is that. I had almost forgotten what it was. Now I just hope it hangs out for a while before the thunderstorms.

    Good Old Verizon
We support a law firm that is now on Day 7 without an internet connection. Verizon doesn't seem to be able to find the problem, or call us back, or do anything useful really. Apparently they've been testing the line this entire time. Their "TOP" tier customer service still puts you on hold for 20+ minutes before you talk to someone. Man do they suck.

Thankfully we have managed to run their mail server and give them minimal internet access using two cellular cards. Also, they signed contracts to move over to a fiber connection with Cogent yesterday, who I know and love. So now it's just a race to see if Cogent can install a fiber line quicker than Verizon can fix a crappy DSL. Even with the six day head start, I think Verizon is going to lose.

    Kindle 2
Looking at some of the launch information it looks like a nice improvement. I've always been impressed by the screen and its ultra-low power consumption. What I think I'm most surprised by though, is how fucking old Stephen King looked at the launch event.

    Thanks!
Thanks to everybody that came out for Festivus 2008. With your help we raised $1,257 for Philabundance. How awesome is that.

    Silly me
A friend of mine posted some pictures to Flickr wearing knee high socks. A user named Kneesox commented on one of her pictures and said "awesome socks!" Now I think knee high socks are indeed awesome. In my head I was envisioning some girl like my friend that likes knee highs. This is what I found when I clicked on their link.

has been good, but I'll be happy to be back home soon.  It's odd living in the past.

It'll be great to be back for the World Series.  Go Phils!

    GPS
This week I was working out in Radnor, PA, which involves the unfortunate task of driving on 76. Now you'd think the fact I was getting out there by 7:30 would make it a reasonable drive, but you'd be wrong. What I've realized is that GPS makes you go backwards.

When you used to drive someplace you'd always be getting closer. Now the GPS originally says you'll get there at 7:00, then 7:02, then 7:10. On Wednesday it started at 6:58 and ended at 8:02. Garmin is particularly bad because it expects you to do 80 the entire time. I constantly have to add about 25% to its estimated arrival time. Anybody that knows me knows how hard that is on my ego.

Also, getting up at 5am doesn't fit well with... really anything.

    Back to Law and Order
I think I've spent more time this month in hotels than at home. It's amazing how bad TV in general tends to be. I did end up with 2 queen beds, which originally I didn't like, but I've found jumping between them is as much fun as it was when I was 6. Although it loses a lot with out Vince and pillow jousting.

In sad news, the park that's mentioned here was closed on Monday. I don't know if this is a permanent thing, or something temporary, but it made me sad.

    Happy birthday Culann!

    The World
It's funny how the world always seems so fucked up to me, especially in the US. At the same time when you look at it, these are really the good days. There aren't any real wars to speak of. The economy, even in its current state, isn't horrible. The world is really doing rather well. Go world.

Now if we can just get off this planet and help ensure our survival.

    Hit that
    From here http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/About/safety_cellphone.htm :

"According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it is estimated that 25% of all police-reported traffic accidents are accountable to driving distraction from all sources, including cell phones."

So if only 25% of accidents are because of distractions, what are the other 75% caused by? Stupidity? Maybe they're intentional? I just expect that number to be much higher than 25%.

    3:37 pm
    ...
It's really rare these days that I can sleep in. For some reason my body hates me and even on a perfectly peaceful Saturday morning it'll revolt at the idea of sleeping past 10:00. Today I woke up at 2:37pm. Now I didn't go to sleep until after 6, but it was so nice to sleep so late.

Unfortunately I also woke up with a splitting headache. I drank more beer last night than probably in the last 5 years. So now I'm sitting here more or less worthless to the world pondering absolutely nothing and wondering if this even qualifies as existence.

    Anyway, happy Sunday.

    This sounds dirty, right?
I'm staying at an Embassy Suites in DC while I'm at a conference.  The sign that would normally say do not disturb, says the following:

"There's a good reason for you not to knock right now"

It made me giggle.  Seriously though, doesn't that sound dirty?

    Happy Birthday!
    Today in history.

1938 - "Our Town," by Thornton Wilder, was performed publicly for the first time, in Princeton, NJ.
1951 - Fidel Castro was ejected from a Winter League baseball game after hitting a batter. He later gave up baseball for politics.
1973 - Joe Frazier lost the first fight of his professional career to George Foreman. He been the undefeated heavyweight world champion since February 16, 1970 when he knocked out Jimmy Ellis.

    And most importantly...

    1977 - Vincent J. Baker was born.

    Happy birthday!

There's one furious man that has a lot of style, and today is his birthday. Not just any birthday mind you, but the big 3-0. Happy birthday Jeff! I miss the hell out of you. I hope today is a wonderfully perfect day.

P.S. it's snowing, like really snowing, right now in Philly.

    Thank You!
To everybody that made it last night, thank you.  Special thanks to all of the wonderful people that made food, brought things to drink, and gave a little bit extra.  Dave and Neil, thanks for running the 50/50.  The goal was to raise $500 and when all was said and done we raised $632 for the Salvation Army.  We have a great group of friends and it really warms my heart how wonderful everybody was. You guys are great.
